Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has a new weapon in his armoury as the Gunners seek to claim the Premier League title after a succession of near misses.

While Arteta is seeking reinforcements on the field, particularly in attack, David Ornstein has announced that he is also reshaping his staff behind the scenes in order to be in the best possible condition for the season.

He has recruited Gabriel Heinze to join his coaching staff, The Athletic states.

The Argentine has previously been tipped as a potential Manchester United manager, having featured as a player for the Old Trafford side. He has been out of work since November 2023, when he departed Newell’s Old Boys, where he was the head coach.

Heinze will arrive following the departure of the highly rated Carlos Cuesta, who has moved to Parma to take the step up to head coach.

A different approach coming at Arsenal?

Known as a hard-nosed and aggressive defender during his playing days, Arteta previously spoke of his admiration for the South American, who he played with at PSG.

“The other inspirations were Mauricio Pochettino and Heinze, those two were next to me all the time, behind me, and they were guiding me in everything I had to do in my professional life, how I had to understand the game and they were inspirational to me,” he said at the start of the season.

Heinze is still a coach who demands a good deal of his players, even being drawn into controversy during a stint with Atlanta United, when he angered club medics by telling his players to limit their water intake.

During his time in MLS, he was also said to have a difficult relationship with the players as he demanded they keep their phones on so they could be contacted at any point.

This approach is very different to that practised by Cuesta, who was seen as a valuable link between the Arsenal squad and Arteta.
